Ordinary chondrite (L6)
Fell 18 February 1948
Norton County, Kansas, USA
A 11.2-gram part slice with rare hand-painted number from the H. O. Stockwell collection and vintage mimeograph label from an unknown collection. H. O. Stockwell is a meteorite hunter from the mid 20th century. He is best known for using a wheelbarrow-like metal detector to search for buried meteorites. This machine is referred to as the “Hedden-Stockwell” dectector. An original photograph of Stockwell with his metal detector accompanies this specimen, as well as a vintage Ness County meteorite specimen card from the Ward’s Natural Science Establishment, showing the price of Stockwell specimens acquired by this well-known company in the 1950s.
